Of a group of 30 high-school students, 8 study French, 12 study Spanish, and 3 study both French and Spanish. How many students of the group study neither French nor Spanish?
are the three people that study both included in the 12 that study spanish and the 8 that study french? if that's right than gavriella, andrew, and jake r right.
If the 3 who study both French and Spanish are included in the 8 and 12, then the answer is 10. So, Gavriella, Jake and Andrew would be right. But, if the 3 weren't included, the answer is 7.
or if its a trik question then i think its 7 but i thinks the three are included because they didnt have to mention them they couldve done anything with them so i think they put them as both for a reason so i stik with ten
8 plus 12 is 20 and we don't need to know about the students that do both the languages because they're included. So then, do 30 minus 20 and the answer is 10.
i don't think anyone so far are right i think that there are 5 that study french, 9 that study spanish plus the 3 that study both because i think the whole class including the 3 make the classes 8 and 12 so there are actually 5 and 9 plus the 3 that study both so the classes are 5+9+the 3 that study both which =17 so there are 13 that don't study french nor spanish.
i think sam i right actually that the 3 that study both are ones of the group that do both so3 of the 8 kids in spanish could be the 3 that studdy both so i think sam is right
Remember...out of the 8 that Study French, 3 of those also study Spanish. So that means 5 study ONLY French. And since 12 study Spanish and 3 study both that means 9 study ONLY Spanish. So...out of the total 30 high school students, 13 study neither French nor Spanish.

8+12 equals 20 so ten of them study something else
i think gavriella is right because the 3 students that study both probably are included in the total amount so i think its 20.
i agree with andrew and gaviella because i think that the 3 that study both are included
wouldn't be 30-8=22-12=10-3=7
I would think the answer would be seven. I don't get wut gavriella, andrew, and jake r saying

daniel I think that is wrong because the question says how many students study neither spanish nor french

I think it is seven because 30-8-12-3=7
i think the ones that do both are included because they study both not 1 so i think the answer is 10

There are 7 left because
12s
18f
3sf so... ya
o wait nvm the answer is 10 because the other 3 are included

10 dont study either because 12+8=20 and 30-20=10. The 3 that study both are included so i dont count them.
The 3 students arent included because its one of those circle grapgh thingies where they overlap so they are included in the 12 and 8.
i first added 8 and 12 and i know the three is included in that so 30 minus 20 is 10
well if 8 study french and 12 Spanish you add those together makes 20
and if there are 30 students you have to do 30-20 which is 10. There are 10 students that dont study both.
there are 30 students and 20 of them study spanish and/or french so 30-20=10

12+8=20 + 3 equals 23 so 7 students dont study french or spanish how is there another explanation
i agree with everybody else...
12 + 8 = 20
20 + 3 = 23
30 - 23 = 7
7 students don't study spanish or french.
i think sam i right actually that the 3 that study both are ones of the group that do both so3 of the 8 kids in spanish could be the 3 that studdy both so i think sam is right
I think that 10 people study neither because 30-12+8=10 and the 3 other people are already counted in the 12 and 18 so you would subtract an extra 3

oh btw cami its called a ven diagram. that also shows that the 3 are included
A venn diagram is a great strategy for this problem (although the answer is NOT 7 and NOT 10).
Here is an outline of how to solve the problem.
